“The little play that could”
Posted on Friday, October 14th, 2011 for Between The Scenes Blog.

The title of this blog comes from a review by the New York theatre critic David Cole. “the little play that could.” His was one of nearly thirty reviews where critics had nothing but positive things to say about the play Next Fall.

How could one show that that covers so much emotional territory garner such praise?

Simply enough – there is something in it for everyone to relate to.

No we are not all gay, but we all, at one point or another, have all questioned our religious beliefs. Not everyone has experienced unconditional love, but we look for it. And tragedy, it means something different to everyone, but we have all dealt with something we believe is tragic. Finally, there is the subject of family. Each persons’ family is unique unto themselves, and we all have them, whether they are blood related or not.

So why so many positive reviews – Next Fall relates to a vast majority of us on numerous levels. This means that the critics who saw it not only recognized this fact, but felt it themselves. It also means that the subject matter that is covered is done so with a great sense of human nature.

What the heck does that mean? It means that in the darkest and most stressful of times there are things to cry about, things to rage about, things to smile about, and yes – even things to laugh about. Our sense of humor during such moments is sometimes the one thing that truly keeps us sane.

This is the power behind our next show Next Fall. It is the force of its truths that drove critics to write the numerous positive reviews they did. Hopefully, it will be this relatability that makes our audiences tell their friends to come and see the show after seeing it for themselves.
