ABOUT THE PLAY
The Scene by Theresa Rebeck,
a recent Off-Broadway hit as well as a hit at last years Humana Festival of
New America Plays is also a nominee for the Steinberg Prize as The American
Theater Critics Association’s Best Play 2006. The Scene is a scathing comedy
about dating, fame, fulfillment and obsession with pop culture. It is about
those who are in the dating scene; those who want to be in the scene and
those who have left the scene and want to return. (Or do they?) Opens June
11-28. |

MEET THE PLAYWRIGHT - Theresa Rebeck
Past New York productions include
The Water's Edge, Spike Heels, Loose Knit and The Family of
Mann at Second Stage; Bad Dates and The Butterfly Collection
at Playwrights Horizons; and View of the Dome at New York Theatre
Workshop. Omnium Gatherum (co-written with Alexandra
Gersten-Vassilaros, and finalist for the Pulitzer Prize) was featured at the
Humana Festival 2003, and had a commercial run at the Variety Arts. Her play
The Scene, produced at the Humana Festival in March of 2006, will be
seen at Second Stage as part of the 2006-2007 season. Her work has been
widely produced both regionally and internationally. She is currently
working on commissions from Playwrights' Horizons, Denver Theatre Center,
and Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park.
In television, Ms. Rebeck has written for Dream On, Brooklyn Bridge, L.A.
Law, Maximum Bob, First Wave, Third Watch, and NYPD Blue, where she also
worked as a producer. Produced features include Harriet the Spy, Gossip, and
the independent feature Sunday on the Rocks. Awards include the Mystery
Writers of America's Edgar Award, the Writer's Guild of America award for
Episodic Drama, the Hispanic Images Imagen Award, and the Peabody, all for
her work on NYPD Blue. She has been a finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn
prize twice, won the National Theatre Conference Award (for The Family of
Mann), and was awarded the William Inge New Voices Playwriting Award in
2003.
Ms. Rebeck holds a PhD. from Brandeis University in Victorian Melodrama. She
and her husband Jess Lynn have two children, Cooper and Cleo. |
