The remarkable Scott Ripley
reprises his performance in on the most memorable shows as he brings back to
life over 35 different characters in the Tony Award winning Best Play, I Am
My Own Wife.
We are extremely excited to be
bringing this powerful show back, and as an added surprise, we will be
presenting it in the beautiful Booth Playhouse as a co-production with the
North Carolina Blumenthal Performing Arts Center.
I
Am My Own Wife, 2004 winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama as well as the
Tony Award for Best Play begins its run at The Actor’s Theatre, 650 East
Stonewall Street, Charlotte, NC 28202 in September 2006. Hailed as the
“Dramatic Event of the Year” by the New York Post, “Fascinating and
Beautifully Written,” by the New York Times, Doug Wright’s play tells the
story of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, a real-life German transvestite who
successfully navigated the two most repressive regimes of the twentieth
century-the Nazis and the Communists. Charlotte tells her stunning story of
how, through cunning and charm, she defied the iron grip of these two
political regimes. And after it all, viewed as a cultural ambassador, Berlin
honored her with the "Verdienstkreuz," Germany 's highest civil award, in
1993.
Playwright Doug Wright, winner of an Obie Award for sustained achievement,
authored the play and screenplay for Quills (the film, starring Geoffrey
Rush, Kate Winslet, Joaquin Phoenix and Michael Caine, was nominated for 3
Academy Awards) and the book for the new musical Grey Gardens which will
transfer to Broadway in the fall.
Scott Ripley, plays Charlotte
von Mahlsdorf and 34 other characters in this one-man tour-de-force. Ripley,
currently a visiting professor at Davidson College, has appeared
Off-Broadway as well as in regional theaters across the country.
